{1000}{1026}{y:i}You look at that river
{1054}{1096}{y:i}gently flowing by.
{1132}{1181}{y:i}You notice the leaves
{1210}{1257}{y:i}rustling with the wind.
{1270}{1313}{y:i}You hear the birds.
{1324}{1372}{y:i}You hear the tree frogs.
{1374}{1430}{y:i}In the distance, you hear a cow.
{1447}{1488}{y:i}You feel the grass.
{1510}{1589}{y:i}The mud gives a little bit|{y:i}on the river bank.
{1612}{1678}{y:i}It's quiet. It's peaceful.
{1694}{1737}{y:i}And all of a sudden,
{1754}{1809}{y:i}it's a gear shift inside you.
{1830}{1900}{y:i}And it's like taking a deep breath|{y:i}and going,
{1934}{1990}{y:i}"Oh, yeah, I forgot about this."
{2184}{2272}This is the first picture of the Earth|from space
{2279}{2330}that any of us ever saw.
{2335}{2427}It was taken on Christmas Eve, 1968
{2434}{2495}during the Apollo 8 Mission.
{2498}{2560}...within relatively comfortable|boundaries.
{2569}{2686}But we are filling up that thin shell|of atmosphere with pollution.
{3171}{3237}{y:i}Ladies and gentlemen,|{y:i}Mr. Al Gore.
{3282}{3310}I am Al Gore.
{3313}{3394}I used to be the next president|of the United States Of America.
{3460}{3522}I don't find that particularly funny.
{4132}{4184}{y:i}I've been trying to tell this story|{y:i}for a long time,
{4186}{4272}{y:i}and I feel as if I've failed to get|{y:i}the message across.
{4807}{4902}{y:i}I was in politics for a long time|{y:i}and I'm proud of my service.
{5057}{5129}{y:i}You gotta be kidding me.|{y:i}This is a national disaster.
{5132}{5210}{y:i}Get every doggone Greyhound bus line|{y:i}in the country,
{5213}{5258}{y:i}and get their... moving to|{y:i}New Orleans.
{5287}{5327}{y:i}That's them thinking small, man,
{5330}{5406}{y:i}and this is a major, major, major deal.
{5411}{5469}{y:i}What do you need right now?
{5471}{5503}{y:i}There are good people,
{5547}{5615}{y:i}who are in politics in both parties
{5624}{5677}{y:i}who hold this at arm's length
{5686}{5759}{y:i}because if they acknowledge it|{y:i}and recognize it,
{5762}{5843}{y:i}then the moral imperative to make|{y:i}big changes
{5846}{5881}{y:i}is inescapable.
{5884}{5993}{y:i}... unless you fix the biggest damn crisis|{y:i}in the history of this country.
{6321}{6419}...scouted out landing spots|and they lost radio contact
{6422}{6493}when they went around|the dark side of the moon.
{6497}{6556}And there was inevitably|some suspense.
{6558}{6626}Then when they came back|in radio contact,
{6637}{6669}they looked up
{6672}{6757}and they snapped this picture,|and it became known as Earth Rise.
{6767}{6835}And that one picture exploded
{6838}{6903}in the consciousness of humankind.
{6906}{6956}It lead to dramatic changes.
{6958}{7000}Within 18 months of this picture,
{7002}{7065}the modern environmental movement|had begun.
{7078}{7166}The next picture was taken on the last|of the Apollo missions,
{7169}{7205}Apollo 17.
{7208}{7301}This one was taken|on December 11 , 1972,
{7305}{7404}and it is the most commonly published|photograph in all of history.
{7416}{7513}And it's the only picture of the Earth|from space that we have
{7521}{7599}where the sun was directly|behind the spacecraft
{7606}{7720}so that the Earth is fully lit up|and not partly in darkness.
{7746}{7833}The next image I'm gonna show you|has almost never been seen.
{7835}{7945}It was taken by a spacecraft|called "The Galileo"
{7947}{8006}that went out to explore|the solar system.
{8009}{8126}And as it was leaving Earth's gravity,|it turned its cameras around
{8134}{8232}and took a time lapse picture|of one day's worth of rotation,
{8239}{8296}here compressed into 24 seconds.
{8346}{8388}Isn't that beautiful?
{8398}{8463}This image is a magical image in a way.
{8466}{8527}It was made by a friend of mine,|Tom Van Sant.
{8538}{8623}He took 3,000 separate|satellite pictures
{8626}{8733}taken over a three-year period,|digitally stitched For more click on this link
